This large, extremely rare backlit sign is a bona fide piece of American history. It was produced by The Buckeye Brewing Co. of Toledo, OH, which was founded in 1886, but which has origins dating back to the early 1800s. This company changed names several times over the years -- including to "The Buckeye Production Company" during prohibition, and then back to "The Buckeye Brewing Company" once prohibition was lifted in 1933.
Based on the seal depicted on the sign, as well as the fact that the company title is "The Buckeye Brewing Co." rather than "The Buckeye Brewing Company," we believe this sign to have been produced during the pre-prohibition era. Please see last photo in the listing.
The company was bought by Miller Brewing Company in the 1960s or '70s, and production was moved from Toledo to Milwaukee. Sadly, the production facilities were demolished in 1974. Recently, however, the Maumee Brewing Co. of Toledo bought the rights to the Buckeye label. While the original beer recipe was lost, at least an approximation of this historic beer can be enjoyed today.
It is in excellent condition for its age, and lights up well. It measures 60" L x 36" H x 10.25" W. It also has two brackets on the top of the sign so it can easily be hung.
