c. 1930s; Rollodor Manufacturing Co. - Los Angeles, CA

Self-righting mobile floor ash tray manufactured by Rollodor Manufacturing Co., embodying the streamlined styling and novelty utility popular during the early Art Deco period. The design is based on Edgar H. Barbé's U.S. Patent No. 1,905,123, issued April 25, 1933, which utilized a weighted spherical base mounted on exposed wheels to create a self-righting ash tray that could be easily rolled from one location to another while always returning to an upright position. The example features a chrome-plated ash receiver with integrated lighter cradle, chrome stem, marbleized painted decorative elements, weighted rolling base, and matching marbleized counterweight and accessory holder. Combining decorative appeal with practical function, Rollodor's patented design became one of the more recognizable novelty smoking accessories produced during the 1930s.

Structurally sound and appears fully functional. Marbleized paint remains on the ash tray body and the decorative match holder mounted to the stem; however, the finish on the wheel assembly and spherical counterweight survives predominantly on one side, with the remaining sections exhibiting heavy oxidation and finish loss. Both chrome wheel rims display moderate to heavy pitting consistent with age. Chrome plating on the stem and ash tray remains in good condition with typical light surface wear. Overall, the piece presents well while retaining an attractive period patina.
