Vintage Cast Brass Oud Ashtray
c. 1950s-1960s; Made in Israel
Cast‑brass ashtray in the form of a lute/oud, with a pebble‑textured bowl, incised rosette and strings, and triple rests at the "bridge" end; the tapered neck doubles as a handle. Warm, even patina with light handling marks; underside cast MADE IN ISRAEL. Equally at home as a smoking tray or a small catchall on a desk or bar.
In the post‑Nakba decades, Israeli brassware firms such as Pal‑Bell under designer Maurice Ascalon, produced cast‑metal giftware and souvenirs for European and American markets. An Oud is a short-necked, lute-type instrument with a pear-shaped body that is central to many musical traditions in the Middle East and North Africa. The instrument's name comes from the Arabic word "oud," which means "wood".
