1950s-1960s

This tin litho sign is meant to be in the middle part of a door (most likely a screen door) opposite the hinges where a customer can either push on the tin sign rather than push on the screen or pull on the door by the handle to open it.

Peter Kern was a German immigrant who came to the United States in 1852 and settled in Knoxville, TN after being released from capture by the Union Army. Kern established a bakery on the corer of State Street and Main Avenue and later expanded to Market Square in 1876 with a 3-story emporium of baked goods, ice cream, candies, and confections. Peter passed away in 1907, and Kern's descendants sold his company to the Brown family in the 1920s. In 1931, the company moved to a new plant on Chapman Highway, where they focused more on the company's line of breads, which brings us to this push/pull plate. The Kern's Bread brand was purchased in 1989 by Sara Lee.
