c. 1960s; Nissen Trampoline Company - Cedar Rapids, IA

Rare pommel horse manufactured by the Nissen Trampoline Company, the firm founded by George Nissen, inventor of the modern trampoline. The horse features a brown leather-covered body mounted on adjustable chromed steel legs with blue-painted cast fittings and hardwood pommels. Retaining its original Nissen stencil, the piece represents an early example of professional gymnasium equipment produced by one of the most influential names in American gymnastics. The industrial styling, substantial construction, and connection to George Nissen's pioneering work in tumbling and trampoline development make the piece equally appealing as a functional athletic apparatus, display object, or conversation piece.

George Nissen founded the Nissen Trampoline Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and is widely credited with inventing and popularizing the modern trampoline. In addition to trampolines, the company produced a variety of gymnastic and physical education equipment for schools, colleges, military training facilities, and athletic programs throughout the mid-twentieth century.

Shows moderate wear consistent with age and athletic use including scuffs, scratches, staining, finish wear, oxidation to metal components, and age-related patina throughout. Leather covering remains intact and supple with scattered discoloration and use marks. Original painted surfaces show expected wear and loss. Apparatus presents well overall and retains its original Nissen markings.
