c. 1930s-1940s; Jas. & Geo. Stewart Ltd. - Dundee, Dunbarton & Glasgow, Scotland

Constructed of nailed softwood slats, this original export shipping crate was produced for Old Smuggler Blended Scotch Whisky and retains its bold black script logo across the front with red stenciled product information beneath. Side stenciling identifies the contents as "12 Bottles, 2.40 Gallons," imported by W.A. Taylor & Co., New York, N.Y. under permit, reflecting its intended export to the American market following the repeal of Prohibition. The interior retains its original bottle divider system, while additional shipping stencils remain visible on the remaining sides. Original liquor crates with intact graphics such as this were designed for commercial transport but have become highly sought-after advertising and display pieces for bars, collections, and rustic interiors.

Founded in the late 18th century, Jas. & Geo. Stewart Ltd. became one of Scotland's best-known whisky producers, introducing the Old Smuggler brand in 1835. The label gained international recognition for its smooth blended Scotch and remains in production today.

Wood surfaces display extensive scratches, scuffs, abrasions, discoloration, staining, and handling wear. Printed graphics and stenciled markings exhibit fading, wear, and partial loss throughout. Multiple boards exhibit shrinkage, checking, splits, and age-related cracking. A significant crack and associated loss are present along the upper front board, intersecting the "Old Smuggler" graphic. Corners exhibit wear, separation, and minor gaps at joints. Upper portions of the side panels are loose. Numerous nail heads and fasteners remain present with scattered oxidation throughout. Edges display losses, splintering, and roughness consistent with prolonged use. Overall retains a strong rustic appearance and desirable original advertising graphics.
